Mattel began in 1945, as a garage workshop belonging to Harold Matson and Elliot Handler. They both started making dollhouse furniture from picture frame scraps. That proved to be such a success that Mattel switched to making nothing but toys which then came the first music Toy line called "Uka-a-doodle" .
In 1948 the Mattel Company was formally incorporated in California. In 1955, Mattel changed toy marketing forever, by acquiring the rights to produce the popular "Mickey Mouse Club" products. In 1955, Mattel released a its successful patented toy cap gun called the burp gun. In 1959, the now famous Barbie Doll invented by Ruth Handler was released.

Ruth Handler would watch her Daughter play with paper dolls. Ruth wanted to invent a doll that would better facilitate the way young girls were playing with their dolls.
Ruth Handler and Mattel introduced the Barbie doll that she calls by her name as well for young girls and teens. Ruth went on to a family holiday to Germany and found the doll Bild Lilli Doll and used that doll as inspiration for Barbie. Barbie Doll’s first boyfriend, Ken doll , debuted two years after Barbie in 1961.
